About Us

The Jackmans

Shoebox Genealogy is owned and operated by Brad and Janae Jackman, of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Brad is a native of California, and a descendant of Utah pioneer Levi Jackman.  Brad graduated with a degree in History from Brigham Young University-Idaho, and shortly thereafter moved to Salt Lake City to continue a career in genealogy and family history.  Besides his background in history and several years of full-time genealogy research experience, Brad is an award-winning journalist and writer, an experienced editor and publisher, a graphic designer and web developer, and does his best to stay on the cutting edge of technology.  With these varied interests, he brings to Shoebox Genealogy the ability to accomplish almost any task.  Where other research companies are content to limit their services, Shoebox is able to expand the possibilities to include any ideas or projects you may have in mind.

Janae is originally from Idaho Falls, Idaho, where her family has farmed the land in Osgood for over 100 years.  Janae and Brad met at BYU-Idaho, where they shared an interest in history (among other things!), and decided to marry. Janae has also worked as a full time genealogical researcher, and reviews and approves all completed projects.  She currently spends most of her time raising their two children, but always finds time to add her expertise to a research endeavor or publishing project.

Brad and Janae are the parents of two young boys who keep them very busy when they aren’t scouring the internet, books, and microfilm for ancestors.  As professional genealogists, they couldn’t help but give their sons family names.  Both Levi and Jared Jackman share their names with 5th Great-Grandfathers.

The Researchers

Besides the Jackmans, Shoebox Genealogy routinely calls upon the best and most experienced genealogical researchers in the field.  After having worked hand in hand with some of the most respected genealogists in Salt Lake City and across the world, Brad and Janae have developed a network of researchers which is able to complete research for practically any geographic area or time period.  From Turkey to Kashubia, and from New York to Los Angeles, Shoebox is able to give fair and accurate research results for any request.

The Publishers

Before starting Shoebox Genealogy, Brad worked as a journalist and editor for a nationally recognized and award-winning newspaper.  There he was able to use cutting edge computer software and technology to build layouts and page design, manage workflows and projects, and increase the speed at which publishing projects can be completed.  After his move to genealogy, Brad saw a need to bring family history publishing up to date, and began to make connections in the publishing world whereby he could utilize his skills in both fields to provide the best possible results for his clients.  Brad works with local and national printers, and a small traditional bindery in Salt Lake to customize any project to the client’s needs.  A wide variety of printing and binding options are available, which can significantly reduce costs, while providing more options than most family history publishers.  Access to these resources has allowed Shoebox Genealogy to excel in the area of family history publishing.
